What's your name?

One of my favorite parts of having children is naming them.  There are few things you can give someone which they really keep for all their lives.  As fun as it is, giving someone a name always stresses me out also.  The baby, especially since we haven't found out the gender of our last three children, seems unidentifiable and distant for most of the pregnancy.  Here's a rundown of the first four kids and how we settled on their names, and then I'll get to Sully's name.  (Thanks for the idea, Stacy!)

Philip Walker

We thank the Lord for our children and know they are each a gift from Him.  Therefore, Matthew and I decided one part of their name would be somewhat Biblical and the other a family name or something of significance at that time in our lives.  Philip and Matthew are both names of men who were Jesus's disciples.  Thought about Bartholomew, but glad we settled on Philip instead!  Matthew's dad's name is William Walker Brooks, III.  As a tribute to him, we added Walker as Philip's middle name.

Braewyn Faith

With each pregnancy when name-picking time comes, we head to www.babynames.com and peruse the lists.  Many names are mentioned for the funniness or oddity (if a name is on the list, does that mean someone in the world really has that name?!).  Matthew came upon Braewyn which is Gaelic for "brown".  His mom's maiden name is Brown and this was just about the time when the first or second "Lord of the Rings" movie came out with its fairy tale type names.  I told him we were not naming our children after a character from that series, but after some time Braewyn seemed to settle with us.  Faith was my choice as I believe our faith that the Lord is able to do all things is one reason we were personally blessed with children.

Juliet Hope

Since older sister Braewyn had a princess-type name, the name Juliet struck us as similarly princess-like.  Matthew and I were honestly watching two TV series with characters we liked named Juliet ("Psych" and "LOST").  Another criteria for our name picks is that they not be on the top 100 popular lists.  Juliet was not a name we had heard around the church nursery.  Hope was an easy pick as it is often paired with Faith.  I pray these two sisters would always be close, if not in physical location at least through a dear friendship. (Juliet's name had she been a boy was to be Corbin Seth!)

Rylan Judah

During my pregnancy with Juliet and the years since, I have grown to be close friends with my neighbor Greta and her family.  Her's son's name is Kylan so when Matthew came upon Rylan on a baby name list, it became our boy name choice. It was similar without copying exactly.  Also it fit in with our family joke about the first initials of the first three kids' names... P, B, & J... on Rye!  (Not sure if that's a sandwich I'd want to eat but the joke sounds good.)  The year of my pregnancy with Rylan, my Bible study class was reading through the book of Genesis.  Jacob (the grandson of Abraham, the father of the nation of Israel) had twelve sons whom all of the nation of Israel descend.  Judah was his fourth son and the ancestral line which Jesus would come.  The Bible refers to Jesus as "The Lion of Judah."  Funny that Rylan loves to roar like a lion! (Rylan's name had he been a girl was to be Shelby something; never did pick a middle name!)

 And now here's..........Sullivan James!

Again we went to the name lists, and Matthew liked some names which I didn't.  I liked some names he didn't.  While driving around to see Christmas lights with the kids, I read the name Sullivan off the list.  We both thought it sounded good.  Matthew said he liked Sully as a nickname or even as a given name.  Sully makes us all think one think...

When Philip said, "Like James P. Sullivan," I thought Sullivan James sounded good. We've always said we wouldn't pick a name and call the child by the middle name.  Too much explaining to do when meeting people.  Switch this one around and Sully could be his first name with James as a good middle name.  Again James is another of Jesus's disciples plus Jesus's own brother was named James and wrote the book of the same name in the Bible.  My grandpa's name is James also which ties in family and Biblical links.  So there you have it.  Sullivan James "Sully" Brooks.  We are all so thankful to have him.  (Had he been a girl, Sully would be named Charlotte Noelle!)

Little Sully is heading home at last

After a nice stay in the hospital, we are back out in the world and going home. It's such a weird feeling to be inside for two and a half days then suddenly feel cold winter air hit you in the face. As the saying goes, there's no place like home.

Welcome to the world, Sully!

I am grateful to introduce our newest little Brooks family member, Sullivan James Brooks!  Looking at our baby boy, I have to remind myself that he has been inside my body for the last several months and he's really, truly here to stay!  Sully (his everyday nickname) was born last night, January 5th, at 9:25 pm.  He weighs 8 lbs., 1 oz. and is 20 inches long.  Just a quick recap of his birth story begins back on December 16.  I had an OB appt that morning and was surprisingly told I was dilated to 3 cm.  This sent me on a thought pattern that he might be born any day there after.  Well, I had my eyes on Christmas Day, not wanting to have him before that as he would be considered full term by December 25.  Thankfully, the weeks passed and I was still pregnant on Christmas Day, New Year's Day, and a few days after.  This past weekend found me having contractions off and on all day. Yesterday morning I called my OB's office to ask about being seen to know if I had further dilated.  I was right in my guess because the doctor told me I was now at 5 cm!  She filled out paperwork and told me to take it over to Labor & Delivery of our hospital.  I was admitted!

By 1:00 pm yesterday, I found myself in a hospital gown, getting an IV inserted into my arm, and thinking, "This is really happening!"  Matthew and I relaxed as the hours went by. I received an epidural around 4:00 pm, my water was broken at 6:00 pm, and we waited hoping I would reach 10 cm very quickly.  It look a little longer than I expected, but by 9:15 pm, I had the urge to push.  About 15 minutes and 4 pushes later, Sullivan was outside my body and answering the big question we had for the last 9 months... would Philip, Braewyn, Juliet, and Rylan be getting a brother or a sister?  New little brother!!

Our parents had brought the older four kids to the hospital at 8:30 pm so by 10:00 pm, they were all so excited to meet Sully.  It was a little chaotic and I was shaking all over from the epidural and rush of emotions.  Juliet, who had wanted a sister all along, warmed up quickly to Sully after watching Braewyn hold him and wanting to hold him herself.  Rylan tried to poke Sully, but then quickly got distracted by some of the machines in the delivery room.  Philip was happy to see such a tiny, healthy brother.

Without further ado, here is our Sully!

We thank the Lord for you, Sully, and pray that He will help us raise you to love Him.  Philip, Braewyn, Juliet and (one day) Rylan love you so much and will be great big brothers and sisters to you.  You are a precious, new addition to our family!

Christmas in the park

To beat these last few weeks of pregnancy restlessness, a holiday outing was in order.  This past Monday evening, we traveled to Greenville to enjoy a moderate winter day outside, followed by a scrumptious meal at Kanpai of Tokyo, and finished with seeing the Holiday Lights at Roper Mountain one night before they closed for the season.  These days I feel I'm playing Russian Roulette, never knowing when the contractions will start or my water will break.  Kind of hoping to push my luck and cause this baby to come, but alas we had a great time of uneventful, family fun that night.

Sweet moment on the way as Rylan kept trying to hold Philip's hand.  He LOVES his big brother!

My little guy is getting so big.

Pilot Rylan!

We are glad to have Grandma with us on outings!  And she's a great swing pusher.

Juliet enjoyed the baby swings more than Rylan.

Philip scaled the climbing tower but Braewyn was a bit hesistant without her wrist guard.

No problem on the rocking truck!

This is how big kids handle the toddler rides.

Is she a super hero?

Next stop Kanpai.  Weren't sure how this little guy would handle being so close to the fire.

He liked seeing the food pour out onto the hibachi grill top, but did break out into sobs for a few moments when the oil went up in flames.
Finally we made it to Roper Moutain.  After several nights of driving through neighborhoods, the kids weren't sure if they wanted to see "more lights". But these are moving and visiting the Winter Wonderland (marshmellows for roasting, cotton candy, photo opps, etc.) makes it worth it too.

All loaded into Santa's sleigh.  Rylan is thinking, "Let me go."

I think he wanted to drive.

Rylan enjoyed riding on my lap in the front passenger seat for the drive-thru light show.

We'll be back next year, Holiday Lights!
